Q&A

What's Your Name? Do You Have Any Nick-Names?

For the purposes of my writing and the promotion of said writing, it is Jazzelle Braewyn Zariel. As you may have noticed form my "About JB" page, it is my pen name. Generally, my nick-names are J.B. (many people call me that), or Jazz.

Why the Pen Name Then?

I have high standards when it comes to writing. I say that meaning if in any way I can improve what I write, I will to whatever extent necessary. My name is one example of this. It has not adequetely reached my standards, and when writing it (which is often) I do not take pride in it. Hence the changing of my name to my pen name.

What if You Become Published? Wouldn't You Want People To Know Your Real Name?

My goal is to become published, yes, but that it because I am so in love with my story, and only want the opportunity for others to love it too. It is not, however, my goal to be famous, and am not doing this to be the next Stephen King or Nora Roberts. I just want to do well in what I love, and anything added on to that is extra, and certainly not the main purpose of my writing.

When and Where Do You Write?

I often write in the evening, or at night. With my current schedule how it is, that is the time when I am free to write. If given a choice, I prefer to write in the morning, on my computer in my room.

How Often Do You Write?

I write a few evenings a week, and on weekends. I do try and write as much as I can without over-working myself.

How Much Thought Do You Put Into Character Names, Their History, The Setting Et Cetera?

For my characters I have put a great deal of time, thought, and effort into finding the perfect name for them. For the main characters, I spend some time finding the right one, and search many sites for the proper fit. *All of my secondary characters have a meaning behind their name that suits either their role, their personality, or what their future will be like.*

And, no, I will not tell you the names of my characters; you will have to wait and read it in the published novel.

*I have thought out everyones history to a lengthy extent. I know the story of everyones parents, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, children; which many would be a grand story in themselves. I have this all written down, and have spent a lot of time going through and figuring out names and dates and places and the impact they have on the characters in this story. Most of these the readers will not know, but rest assured that I know not only the present and future of my characters, but also the past as well.*

As for setting, it is fairly simple for my novels. I do not want a setting that would take away from the plot of the story. What do I mean? Well, if I had a intricate setting that was complex and needed much detail, that would be page space that would not be focused on the main conflicts or characters of my story, and would slow it down to a pace I do not want. Be that as it may, where my stories take place are not any less interesting, but it is not the main point of the book. I love where I have set my stories, for I believe it is the perfect background for everything that happen in it and around it. It is almost like a character in itself, with its own aura and personality.

Who Is Your Target Audience?

*This novel will be for Young Adults, although that choice was put under scrutiny by myself for some time. I was going to change some things around, and add in certain scenes that would most definitely be for adults, but I decided to go with my original thoughts on it and stick to the category of Young Adults.*

Do You Have a Favourite Character?

*Yes I do. Well, I have several. It's not exactly something that is easy to decide. The lead female and male characters have a special place in my heart, as well as the lead antagonist (which is probably new to most people considering I haven't talked about him before). There is also another character I can deeply sympathize with because I inadvertently made him have similar qualities to me. He certainly isn't exactly like me, don't think of it like that at all, but their are some traits we share. Naturally I love every other character too so I suppose I don't have a favourite (personally, this is a very unfair question to ask).*

As for characters in different story ideas; I have many favourite characters. They are all too unique to be compared. Some are sarcastic, cynical, care-free, self-centred, some can't say no to people, some are naive, some are fairly normal, and some are very strange. They all have their quirks, and they all are important to me.
